**Tarsus Pharmaceuticals (TARS)** said on **September 4, 2026** that it has completed its acquisition of **Alkeus Pharmaceuticals**, a privately held biotech focused on retinal disease. The deal, first announced on **August 6, 2026**, closed after customary closing conditions in the merger agreement were satisfied, and gives Tarsus **worldwide rights to gildeuretinol acetate (ALK-001)**.

Gildeuretinol is a **once-daily oral small molecule** designed to reduce the accumulation of toxic vitamin A dimers in the retina *while preserving the normal visual cycle*. Tarsus says the compound has shown a promising tolerability and efficacy profile across **more than 400 individuals studied**.

The candidate carries **Breakthrough Therapy, Orphan Drug, Fast Track and Rare Pediatric Disease designations** from the FDA for Stargardt disease. It is currently in the global **NORTHSTAR Phase 3 trial**, with topline data anticipated in **2029** \- a long runway before any regulatory filing.

Stargardt disease is a rare inherited retinal disease that often begins in childhood or early adulthood and damages the macula, progressively affecting the ability to read, recognize faces and drive. Tarsus puts the U.S. patient population at **as many as 86,000 people**, of whom **more than 36,000 have been clinically diagnosed**, and notes there are **no FDA-approved therapies**.

CEO and Chairman **Bobby Azamian** called the closing *an important step forward in our vision to build a leading eye care company*, adding that ALK-001 has the potential to become *a foundational medicine* for Stargardt patients. Tarsus describes the program as a **potential blockbuster opportunity** in one of the largest inherited retinal diseases.

The acquisition broadens a pipeline built around **XDEMVY**, the company's approved treatment for Demodex blepharitis, which generated **$173.9 million in second-quarter 2026 net product sales**, up more than **69% year-over-year**. Tarsus has guided to **$685-705 million** in full-year 2026 XDEMVY sales and is also developing TP-04 for ocular rosacea, TP-05 for Lyme disease prevention and IRX-101 as an ocular antiseptic.
